Dan from Mission Science Workshop called us up and invited us to go hunting for whale bones near Pescadero. Some friends tipped Dan off to the remains of a juvenile humpback whale that had beached itself a few weeks ago. Kate and Michelle went along. We recovered some portions of the spine, some large fragments of the skull, and a few intact ribs. The most exciting find? We salvaged an entire rack of baleen! The recovered remains will make some nice additions to the teaching collections at Mission Science locations around the Bay Area.
Michelle and Kate took these pictures for your viewing pleasure.
